special note

THINGS STARTED TO CHANGE AFTER 400 YEARS OF OTTOMAN EMPIRE
Things got so bad economically and culturally under the Turks that the Arabs of Saudi Arabia rebelled against the Ottoman Empire in 1916.

Familiar with a British soldier that was called Lawrence of Arabia? That was his time.

After WWI, during which time the British defeated the Ottoman Empire, leaders of Western countries did a horrible job of splitting up lands formerly ruled by the Turkish empire according to their own interests in order to control foreign natural resources.

Most people don’t realize that many countries they think of as “ancient,” like Iraq, weren’t formalized as nations under the names and borders by which we know them today until the 1920’s and 1930’s.

As an example, Iraq wasn’t officially named Iraq until 1921, which is also when these heads of state forced three warring factions to live in the same country; groups that should have had and could easily have had their own lands to live in peace.

They knew virtually nothing of the Near East (called the Middle East starting in the 1920’s) and invested little time into understanding the cultures to create lasting peace.

Rather than WWI being “The war to end all wars,” they created geopolitical problems that would set the stage to be the crux of many unnecessary future wars.
