why support israel?
part 2
a unique background
“NEXT YEAR IN JERUSALEM”
This is a famous saying among Jews in the Diaspora for generations longing to return to their Homeland, as decreed by God Himself.
The Jews didn’t go in and colonize or plunder some wealthy land. Far from it. Here’s some critical insight about that…
Mark Twain, who visited the land of Israel in 1867 (referred to as Palestine at the time), described it as a
“…desolate country whose soil is rich enough, but is given over wholly to weeds—a silent mournful expanse… We never saw a human being on the whole route… There was hardly a tree or a shrub anywhere. Even the olive and the cactus, those fast friends of a worthless soil, had almost deserted the country.”
He further characterized the landscape as
“of all the lands there are for dismal scenery, I think Palestine [Israel] must be the prince.”
And, just in case anyone questions the authenticity of this trip validating the condition of the land…

how the jews acquired the land
Since 1855, 12 years prior to Mark Twain’s infamous visit, Jews had been buying land in Israel.
Frequently, and simply because of being Jewish, they had to pay 5 times to 10 times the actual value of the land that Arabs were willing to sell.
Note that the Arabs were obviously willing to sell their then current ownership of land for inflated prices, free of coercion of any sort.
Keep in mind also that, as the Jews built out the desert, the value of all surrounding land would increase, right?
Example: You have raw land. You sell some of it to people coming to rebuild their homeland… you become wealthy by later selling your raw land, having done nothing to it but wait for its value to go sky high because it’s next to the land that you sold to them.
“A rising tide lifts all ships.”
Keep reading for details of how this develops.
Under the rule of the Ottoman Empire at the time, some of these landowners were tribal leaders who could gain ownership through award by the Turks, purchase, conquest of a neighboring tribe, or even gambling (though forbidden in Islam) of several types, from dice (made of bones or wood at the time) to contests involving camels, horses or other animals.
Few of these landowners had intentions of developing the land in any way and, eventually, in the 1940’s, all were ordered by the Arab League to stop selling any more land to Jews.

WHERE JEWS GOT MONEY TO BUY THE LAND
In addition to individual and group donors around the world, a major source of the money to buy land came from generations of Jews around the world putting money into little blue cans known as “Blue Boxes” that were designed to collect money to buy land in Israel.
Most any Jew that you meet over the age of 50 will likely smile big remembering the donation, or “tzedakah” boxes in synagogues, businesses and even in homes.
Children grew up putting in coins for Israel with many people hoping to someday make “Aliyah” to the Land; that actually being a fulfillment of major prophecy still being fulfilled continuously today.

THERE WERE A MILLION BLUE BOXES WORLDWIDE BY WWII
From its inception in 1901 to 2025, the Jewish National Fund planted over 240 million trees in Israel. It has also built 180 dams and reservoirs, developed 250,000 acres (1,000 km2) of land and established more than 1,000 parks that Jews as well as Arabs and visitors from around the world have enjoyed.
HAVE YOU EVER TRIED DEVELOPING A DESERT?
In the initial decades, the conditions were horrible and the work excruciatingly hard. Many Jews who had been born there, as well as new pioneers, died in their efforts to help God “make the desert rejoice and the flowers bloom” (Isaiah 35:1-10) into a good homeland for their people.
Coinciding with Mark Twain’s description, it was essentially sand, rock and dirt with extremely sparse vegetation of any sort and visible water rare within even a few days journey in any direction.
In fact, the land was so raw that there weren’t even formal borders between many lands of tribes & nomads who sparsely populated the deserts at that time.
It’s said that, prior to 1917, you could travel between Mecca and Damascus without encountering any national borders.
Today’s Gaza Billionaires who have made so much of their money from taking food and supplies donated by Israel and international groups, then selling billions of dollars of these donated goods to their own people in Gaza, along with placing taxes on those items, have more vegetation in the yards of their mansions than the land had in those days for miles around.
THE JEWS CREATE MASSIVE OPPORTUNITIES FOR ARABS
Efforts to restore the land created huge numbers of job opportunities. So, as a natural consequence, since immigration for Jews was so tightly regulated and limited, Egyptians and Arabs from all over the Middle East (Egyptians, Transjordanians, Arabs of Saudi Arabian origin & other countries) flooded in to get work.
Under the rule of the Muslim Turks, their countries were suffering economically and had never set up social support systems.
There were also many Syrians and Lebanese (Syro-Lebanese migration) who emigrated from these lands to Palestine in the 1800’s.
Syria and Lebanon were hit especially hard by the “silk crisis” which was caused by the Chinese undercutting the silk market in a time of accelerating growth in global trade which was leaving the antiquated Ottoman Empire behind.
One of the main causes of such great destitution in the Near East at the time was the Ottoman Empire’s political structure which was characterized by a feudal system with powerful local lords and frequent warfare between rival factions, further contributing to instability and insecurity.

“To your descendants, I will give this land.”
Genesis 12:7

JEWS CONTINUALLY IN ISRAEL OVER 3,000 YEARS
And He said to him, “ ‘YOU SHALL LOVE THE
LORD YOUR
GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.’
“This is the great and foremost commandment.
“The second is like it, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.’
“On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.”
Matthew 22:37-40 NASB
“This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you.”

dig deep inside & consider
Israel is the only country that, when attacked by others, is expected to return land won by defending itself to the genocidal attackers.
dig deep inside & consider
When you hear any land in Israel referred to as “disputed” anything, remember that according to Islamic law, your family’s right to even exist as humans outside of Islam is considered to be “disputed.”
